Over the next decade, Australia will play a critical role in the global renewable energy transition. The shift towards greener energy can bring a wealth of opportunities, including new jobs, a safer climate and a more sustainable economy. But while the mining and infrastructure sectors are crucial to ensuring a just energy transition, these sectors are particularly prone to corruption. The urgent phase-out of fossil fuels and the transformations needed in infrastructure and mining are paved with corruption and governance risks, leaving local communities, workers, Indigenous Peoples and women particularly vulnerable to the impacts of corruption on the energy transition.
Transparency International Australia has led our global movement’s Accountable Mining Programme since 2016, reflecting Australia’s 10 special role in the natural resources sector, both regionally and worldwide. Our research and advocacy focuses on strengthening the sector’s governance, promoting business integrity and reducing corruption risks in the energy transition. We work with policymakers, industry leaders and civil society to ensure that mining and infrastructure governance is transparent, accountable, participatory and meets the social and environmental needs of current and future generations.
A safer climate and our shared prosperity are at stake.
To support a just energy transition, we are working for stronger anti-corruption measures, environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards and business integrity for these sectors, both in Australia and throughout the world. This involves enhancing regulatory oversight, fostering transparency, holding companies accountable and ensuring strong social accountability in environmental and development decision-making, especially for women, Indigenous Peoples and local communities. Together, through Transparency International Australia, we can help ensure a just energy transition for everyone, globally.
