Freedom of Information (‘FOI’) laws in Australia grant members of the public a general right
to information which is held by Government Ministers, Departments and Agencies in documentary form.
The framework of FOI rights in Australia is established by Federal and State legislation.
In 1982, the Federal Parliament passed the Freedom of Information Act 1982.
Each of the States has also enacted similar legislation.
