TI Australia is the Australian national chapter of Transparency International (TI)
an international not-for-profit organisation devoted to curbing corruption worldwide.
The TI Australia e-Update is a monthly update giving information on the fight against corruption
in Australia and worldwide.
In This Update: Amidst extensive changes to the criminal law, passed by the Australian Senate two weeks ago was the ramping up to dissuasive levels of the fines for bribery offshore in the Crimes Legislation Amendment (Serious and Organised Crime) Bill (No. 2) 2009. AICD?s The Boardroom Report for 10 February 2010Huguette Labelle, Chair, Transparency International, has made the following comments on the Third session of the Conference of States Parties to the UN Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) which took place in Doha, Qatar, in November 2009. ?This was a key meeting for TI and the anti-corruption community generally, since it involved tough negotiations about the UNCAC review mechanism, as well as discussions on asset recovery, preventive measures and technical assistance. Ahead of and during the Conference, TI engaged actively in advocacy on the UNCAC review mechanism, working together with a growing alliance of CSOs and with business associations. Numerous governments pushed hard for a sound outcome, against opposition from an influential group of countries. ?Despite the difficult negotiations, it was possible for governments in Doha to adopt a review mechanism based on peer review, albeit one with some weaknesses... TI's efforts helped push the outcome in the right direction... The expected commencement of a review process in 2010 will provide new momentum for the UNCAC and will open important opportunities for TI advocacy nationally and globally in relation to government anti-corruption efforts. This should include advocacy at national level to encourage governments to choose the stronger options in the review process.?
